Yesterday, Kevin and I embarked on a nine day, six highpoint trip that would culminate with a
Fourth of July hike up Mount Elbert, however, today was a little less ambitious. After the flight
into Denver, Hertz again did well for us by providing a new Chevy Cruze with only two miles
on it. In order to acclimatize and work up to the Mount Elbert climb we elected to make a
clockwise loop starting with a due north bearing to the first nights stay at Terry Bison Ranch
near Cheyenne, Wyoming. There, we wandered around checking out the animals and trying
our hand at lassoing. We quickly got the western vibe by having a beer in the saloon with real
cowboys. Late evening presented us with some gusty winds that passed through. We awoke
to very loud doves cooing and other birds chirping but at least the weather was nice. By early
morning we were into Nebraska and driving up to the high point in very hot and hazy weather.
By the lack of vertical relief you would not know that we were higher than Mount Marcy. Near
there we saw what looked like a Golden Eagle on a fence post and on the way out we stopped
to watch some Pronghorn Antelope. With a long drive ahead of us we did not stay very long.
