With my daughter Emily going to college at the nearby University of Delaware I assumed we
would get the opportunity to see the Delaware highpoint on one of our visits there. Our chance
actually came on the trip down to Corolla, North Carolina for a vacation with the whole family.
We also took the opportunity to visit several colleges for Colleen on the way.

As soon as we parked in front of a house at the corner where the highpoint sign is, within site
of the Pennsylvania border, a woman came over and asked if we were highpointers. The
friendly and talkative woman was Doreen and it turns out that it was her house at the corner
and that she was instrumental in getting the sign erected. This self-appointed Delaware
highpoint caretaker was full of information about the highpoint and the Highpointers club and
she went inside to get her logbook for us to sign. Surprisingly to us, we were the second
group there this day. Doreen spoke of the different people who came through and gave me the
website of a team who had just completed the lower 48 in a record 23 days. She explained the
controversy over the several nearby points which some claimed to be the true highpoint
although they were man-made. Since the area was fairly flat, Kevin and I walked across the
street to the marker which had to be re-exposed by cutting away some of the sidewalk and we
walked the few hundred yards to a spot in front of a trailor home just to be sure we had it
covered. After visiting this highpoint we were motivated to join the Highpointers club which
somehow made this quest feel more official.
One of the easier highpoints, a
walk around the corner.
Just to make sure, we walked
around and stood on some other
spots, even if they were man made.
The sign is by the houses in the
background.
